Tattoo/Microchips

If you have ever had the misfortune of having your pet go missing, you know how important it is to properly identify your animal companion so people can contact you when they find it. As Alberta veterinarians with years of experience helping pets with all their healthcare needs, we often get inquiries from patients asking us to compare microchipping vs. tattoo when it comes to permanent pet identification. Read on for information about our pet identification services so you can make your own decision.

Comparing Methods of Permanent Pet Identification

The tagged collar you put around the neck of your beloved animal companion might seem to be sufficient for purposes of identification. However, collars can break, leaving your pet with no tag for people to check so they can reunite you.

You have two options: a tattoo or a microchip. We recommend that you get your pet a tattoo because it is more visible. However, pet tattoos can fade over time. What’s more, they are city-specific, so keep in mind that if you move, the tattoo might not be able to be traced.

Getting a microchip is good because it is permanent and universally identifiable. A microchip is safely encapsulated in a piece of glass the size of a grain of rice, and it stores contact information about your pet that can be read by a scanner at the vet.

We want to make it easy for you to obtain permanent pet identification for your beloved animal companion. So, we offer discounted pricing on a microchip if done at the same time as spay/neuter. Or, we will include a tattoo with spay and neuter services. It’s your choice!
